A lot of people tell me they aren’t photogenic or they feel a bit awkward in front of the camera. That’s totally normal. You are probably not a professional model. You have chosen to have a professional portrait session with me because you are a devoted pet parent, that likes my lifestyle portraits because you love that natural look.
All you have to do is enjoy your time together and know that I’ve got you. I am an experienced pet photographer and I will get the images you dream of. I know all about you and your personalities from your questionnaire answers and our follow up phone call. We will have discussed your outfit choice. I will know any fears or quirks your pup has and chosen a location that is perfect for you.
This session is unique to you. I know how to read dogs body language and never put a dog in a situation that makes them uncomfortable. I will guide you with a few directions to get you started. You should feel confident in the knowledge that you are emotionally in tune with your furbaby, and that is what I am documenting. You will play and feel, not pose.
There is no need to bring treats or toys for them to focus on, because you and your love and connection is the focus of this session. I know it’s sometimes easier said than done, but try not to constantly talk to your furbaby, so that your mouth isn’t in a funny shape. Think of being in the moment, smiling softly and connecting.
I have been told many times I can talk underwater! But if I’m quiet, you know it’s because I’m seeing some magic through my lens. I’m waiting for the little in-between moments of joy, where your baby gazes up at you, puts their paw or head on you. That’s when I capture you, just as you are, and show you in the images how you feel.
I am obsessed with dogs and there is nothing that your dog will do that will upset or embarrass me.
If you have a high energy working dog and you are worried that they won’t calm down, take them for a walk or play with their ball before the session. You can even do a quick training session for their mental stimulation if you don’t have as much time. We don’t want them to be exhausted, it’s just to take the edge off.
I run my sessions around the dog. They don’t need to be told to sit or do 10 tricks in a row. They don’t need to look at me, in fact I want them to look at you. Being in a new environment can be tiring enough for some doggies. Dogs will be natural in front of me and my camera. If you are feeling nervous, concentrate on slowing your breathing down and try to relax and have fun.
Just remember, I will probably take 150 + photos, some from far away, some focused in on the little details and you’ll end up with less than half of that to choose your favourites from.
My last tip is to get to the location on time, so your furbaby can have a sniff and go to the toilet before the session. I always have spare poo bags!
